Obituary of Donald Leith Dean
The death of Mr. Donald Leith Dean occurred December 19, 2002 at Frederick, Maryland, USA, formerly of Saint John, NB. Born in Saint John, Donald was the son of the late Thomas and Ruby Dean. He is survived by his wife, Edna (Shaw), son Donald B. (Jenifer) Frederick, Maryland, daughters, Colleen Emenau (Paige) of Saint John, NB, Sharon Marr, Greensboro, North Carolina, one sister, Judy Chatterton, Saint John, NB, two brothers, Douglas (Nelda), Saint John, NB and Raymond (Margaret), Fredericton, NB, five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and Ralph and two sisters, Thelma and Barbara. Mr. Dean served with the Carleton and York Regiment during the Second World War, in Sicily, Italy and Holland, where he was wounded. He was awarded the United Kingdom Defense Medal, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. In October 2002, Lieutenant Colonel Peter van Binnenkijk, Assistant Military Attache Royal Netherlands Embassy, presented him with the Medal of Remembrance by the Royal Netherlands Government for his service related to the liberation of Holland in 1945. He was a life long member of the Carleton York regimental Association. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's (Valley) Anglican Church, St. Paul Street, on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at 2:00 PM, with interment following at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Field of Honour.
