Obituary of Stephen Francis Humphrey

The family of Stephen “Steve” Humphrey are deeply saddened to announce his death. Steve passed away October 19, 2004 at the Saint John Regional Hospital following a 10 month battle with cancer. Steve was born in Saint John, the son of the late Francis “Frank” and Mary (Evans) Humphrey. Steve was a member of the RCAF completing his career as a Flight Engineer on the Chinook helicopters. Following his military service Steve returned to Saint John where he pursued a career in sales. He spent many years in the office equipment business where he eventually became owner of the Xerox Sales Agency and Dealership for southwestern NB. Steve thoroughly enjoyed his work and deeply regretted the day when illness forced him to retire. He wanted to thank all of his customers who supported him over the years. Steve was a former member of the Saint John Y's Men's Club and was founding president of Crime Stoppers Saint John. Of the many roles Steve fulfilled throughout his life becoming a Grampy was the one that provided him with endless joy; his granddaughters Monet and Maya lit up his life. His other passion was sailing on the river and he was grateful that he was able to own a boat and realize that dream before his death. Steve deeply appreciated all the prayers and good wishes sent his way. The family would like to thank everyone for their concern and kindness. It made this very difficult journey a little bit easier. Special thanks to Dr. Winston Lee for his care and compassion over the years, also to Dr. Margot Burnell, Dr. John Carson and the staff of Oncology, and the doctors and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the SJRH for their care during his illness. Steve is survived by his wife Connie (Kempster), son Michael of Toronto, daughter Dr. Laurel Comeau and her husband Pierre, granddaughters Monet and Maya Comeau and sister Karen Humphrey all of Saint John. His is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and three brothers and sisters-in-law. Respecting Steve's wishes, there will be no visiting or funeral service. He asked that each of us remember him in our own way. Following cremation, interment will take place at a later date. For anyone wishing to make remembrances in his memory, Steve requested donations be made to Romero House Soup Kitchen or the Cherry Brook Zoo. Family and friends are invited to a gathering in Steve's memory to be held on Sunday, October 24, 2004 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club, Millidge Avenue, Saint John. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (1-506-634-7424).
