Obituary of Richard Burton Heward

Richard Burton Heward formerly of Rothesay, New Brunswick, husband of Ruth (nee Balfour) and father of Alan D. B. Heward, occurred on April 30, 2005 at his residence, the Ridgewood Veteran's Wing. A younger son Eric died on 5th May, 1976 in a Kennebecasis Bay violent gale tragedy at age 20. Richard was born in Montreal, elder son of Ralph and Adrienne Heward. His sister, Marian, Mrs. E.C. Frohloff, lives at Hudson, Quebec and brother Donald lives at Oakville Ontario. Growing up during the Great Depression in the Montreal area and north in the Laurentians, he also greatly valued a year in Saskatchewan that further improved his understanding of real values in life for good balance. In connection with his polio recovery lengthy program, he became an enthusiastic and accomplished cross- country skier. Richard served as a Canadian reconnaissance officer during W.W. II after a year at McGill University. He was proud of being attached to a small Norwegian unit in Winter/Spring 1944, involvement with the 7th Polish Armoured Division of First Canadian Army and as a Scout Troop Leader for other aspects of the liberation of Northwest Europe where strong attention was given to achieving correct understandings for sound recovery. After returning to Canada through hospital channels and graduation from McGill, Richard joined the Royal Trust Company and was transferred to Saint John, New Brunswick in 1967 as Manager of Personal Trust. In order to cope with increasing complications from 1944 chest damage, he applied in 1977 for early retirement that was granted 14 months later. Following cremation at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), Saint John, NB, there will be a memorial service on Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at 1:00 PM from Brenan's Chapel. Interment will follow at Fernhill Cemetery.
