Obituary of Marlene Meredith Thompson

The death of Marlene Meredith Thompson, formerly of 80 Brentwood Crescent, Saint John, occurred on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Shannex Parkland in Millidgeville. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Mary (Rita) and Harold Verner Thompson. A graduate of Saint John High School, she was employed with the Department of Foreign Affairs having held several overseas postings. She was a member of the Royal Barbados Yacht Club and a former member of the Rothesay Tennis Club where she was the 1999 winner of the Turnbull Cup. She was inducted into the Saint John Sports Hall of Fame with the Saint John Alpines Women’s Basketball Team. Marlene was predeceased by her parents, her sisters: Betty Weir (the late Allan), Patricia McKaig, Valerie Vicars and Diane Thompson and her brothers: Harold Thompson and Donald Thompson. She is survived by her sister Ardith Thompson and her brother Peter Thompson (the late Frances) brother-in-law Jim Vicars, sister-in-law Rena Thompson, nieces: Elizabeth (Brent) Greer, Meredith (Brian) Delaney, Alison Weir, Hilary Weir, Jane McKaig and Janet Thompson and nephews: Christopher (Melinda) Thompson and James (Anupama) Vicars as well as several grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In keeping with Marlene’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, October 22 at 12:00 PM from Brenan’s Chapel with interment to take place at Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of donor’s choice.
