Obituary of Catherine Elizabeth Hersey

The death of Catherine Hersey of Saint John, beloved wife of 55 years to the late Russell Hersey occurred on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Bobby’s Hospice. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late John and Grace (Guilfoil) Higgins and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Zoe Doherty (Brian) of Brown’s Flat and son, Brendon "Frank" Hersey (Christine) of Surrey, BC; granddaughters, Sgt. Shanna Wheaton of Trenton, ON, Capt. Sarah Doherty of Moose Jaw, SK and Emma Hersey of Surrey, BC; as well as special great grandson, Andrew Wheaton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Jeffrey Hersey and sisters, Lorraine O’Conner, Lucas, Margaret Losier, Barbara Beldham and Alice "Allie" Geraldine "Gerry" Elderkin and brother, Glendon Higgins. Prior to her retirement, Catherine was employed for 13 years at Simpson Sears Credit Office. She always took great comfort in her faith and attended St. Peter’s Church all of her life, until the age of 93. A sincere thank you and appreciation to Dr. William Irving and the wonderful staff at Bobby’s Hospice for the excellent care provided to Catherine. Also, a heartfelt thank you to her daughter, Zoe Doherty and niece, Jane (Elderkin) Symington for their care and devotion, which allowed Catherine to maintain her independence at home. As per Catherine’s request, there will be no visitation. However, relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated from St. Peter’s Church, 50 Clarendon Street, Saint John on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 10:00 AM. A private interment will take place. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Peter’s Church or Bobby’s Hospice.
