Obituary of Susan Arlene McDevitt-Smith

It is with great sadness that the passing of Susan McDevitt-Smith, beloved wife and best friend of Paul Richard "Ric" Smith and mother to Jaelyn Elizabeth Smith (Chad Tucker), occurred on Tuesday, April 09, 2013 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Susan was born on April 25, 1954 in Saint John, and is survived by her parents, Margaret (Nice) Boyle (Ralph) and Raymond McDevitt (Arleigh). She is also survived by her sisters, Janie Lewis (Steven), Cathie Insley (Gavin), Janice McDevitt, Wendy Stephen (Gary); her brothers, Peter (Leanne), Darren (Pam); and several nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews. Susan had many, many special friends; she was the Matriarch of the "Smelly Cats". She was also a special friend to the "Slackers" and her dog, Bailey Biscuit Lady Smith. Susan was loved from afar; she has many lifelong family and friends who are going to miss her from all over Canada, especially Calgary and Ottawa. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dave Cormier for his special guidance, wisdom and love. Also thanks to Lou, Gary, Dr. Hayhoe, and Dr. Fronnie LeRoy in Halifax. Susan was employed by Canada Border Services and Canada Revenue Agency for over 25 years. She graduated from UNBSJ in 2009 with her Bachelor’s Degree in Business. She loved baseball and loved coaching her daughter’s team. Susan loved their camp in Cambridge Narrows and throwing the kids in the car and heading out for a "road trip". She was very proud of her daughter, Jaelyn and her accomplishments as well as her Irish heritage. She was an inspiration to everyone she came into contact with. She loved to sing the Beatles song "All you need is love"! Although there will be no visitation time, relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 91 Waterloo Street, Saint John, followed by a time of remembrances and refreshment at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). For those who wish, remembrances to the SPCA or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences and remembrances may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com.
