Obituary of Norma Ruth Somerville

Norma Ruth Somerville of Saint John, wife of Malcolm M. Somerville, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 24, 2011 at her residence. Born at Hartland on June 21, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Wendell Philips and Claire Augusta (Boyer) Tedlie. Norma was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the Womens Royal Naval Service. Following her service, she attended and graduated from the Saint John General Hospital School of Nursing. Active in her community, Norma was a former member of the Y’s Menettes and the I.O.D.E. She faithfully volunteered each year with the New Brunswick Competitive Festival of Music, and also volunteered at the New Brunswick Museum. Norma was also active with the Royal Kennebecassis Yacht Club, and served on the Racing Committee each year. As an Anglican by faith, Norma also served on the Chancel Guild and Vestry of the churches she attended. In addition to her husband of 60 years, Norma is survived by two daughters, Anne Cronshaw (Brad) of Halifax, and Meredith Somerville of Quispamsis; grandchildren Caroline Cronshaw, Sarah Cronshaw, John Baxter, and Emily Baxter; and several nieces and nephews in New Brunswick as well as throughout the United States. Norma was predeceased by her son, Malcolm Somerville Jr.; a brother, Wendell “Bud” Tedlie; and a sister, Phyllis Watkins. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday, January 27, 2011, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
