Obituary of James Bernard Murphy

Surrounded by his family, the death of Bernie Murphy, husband of the late Frances (Wilt) Murphy, Occurred at Bobby’s Hospice House on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born on August 11, 1922 in Chatham to the late Daniel and Mary (Lavgine) Murphy. Bernie served in the Canadian Army during World War II. He served overseas being a veteran of Normandy and Juno Beach; he retired as a Sergeant Major. Bernie was a long time member of St. Luke’s Church on Main Street. He was very involved with the church, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School for many years. Bernie was also a Boy Scout Leader and loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his son, Kenneth "Ken" Murphy (Tanya) of Saint John; daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Bailey (Robert) of Brown’s Flat; grandchildren: Nicholas, Morgan, Tara, Katelin and Joshua and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife of 60 years, Frances and his parents, Bernie was predeceased by his son, Jamie; brothers, Jack, Bobby, Herman and Dan and his sister Mary. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Friday February 10th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The Funeral Service will be held from St. Luke’s Church, 369 Main Street on Saturday, February 11th, 2012 at 1:00 PM. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery.
