Obituary of Mary Genevieve Nielsen

Mary Genevieve Nielsen of Saint John, NB, wife of the late Max Nielsen, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Born in Saint John on January 20, 1920, Mary was the daughter of the late Charles and Casta (Stubbs) Voutour. Mary lost her mother in her early teens. After graduating from high school, she taught school in rural Kings Co. for many years, following which she attended Modern Business College in Saint John and worked for Revenue Canada for 37 years receiving many promotions prior to her retirement. Mary is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mary was predeceased by her loving husband Max, brother Joseph and sister Cecilia. She is survived by nephews William and Ronald Kushneryk, Joseph and Stewart Voutour, one niece Patricia Lynn Allison and two nephews-in-law Henrik and Mohns Jakobsen. Mary was a person of unshakeable faith. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church and member of the CWL. She was both kind and generous. She loved nature, birds, crows, and enjoyed immensely the time she and Max spent at their summer camp. Mary had a great sense of humour. She was passionate about her hobbies. She loved music. She was an avid reader and had a keen interest in politics and world affairs. Mary loved baseball and was a great fan of the Toronto Blue Jays knowing many of the players by their first name. She excelled at duplicate bridge and in 1987 the American Contract Bridge League awarded Mary with a life Master membership in recognition of her achievements in bridge competition. Mary treasured her family and friends and was a loyal friend to all who knew her. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, (506) 634-7427 with visiting on Thursday, June 23, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Loch Lomond Road with Reverend Bill Elliott as Celebrant. Interment to take place on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at South Branch Roman Catholic Cemetery, Sussex, NB.
