Obituary of Ernest Clifton Murphy

E. Clifton Murphy of Garnett Settlement, husband of Luella B. (Britton) (Kinney) Murphy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Loch Lomond Villa. Born at Coote Hill, Queens County, on August 27, 1924, he was a son of the late John W. J. and Catherine Maude (Anderson) Murphy. Clifton worked as a finish carpenter on many homes in the Saint John area, and subsequently worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway Grain Elevator for a number of years, and was a long time resident of the Loch Lomond and Garnett Settlement areas. He was the neighbourhood handyman, turning his hand to whatever job was necessary, and was known for helping his neighbours and friends. Clifton was a member of the Loch Lomond Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, and enjoyed singing and playing the keyboard. In his later years, Clifton and Luella attended and enjoyed many musical events in the area. In addition to his wife, Clifton is survived by his children, Gwen Morrow (George) of Fredericton, Barbara Land (David) of Barrie, Ontario, and Richard Murphy (Jean) of Saint John; stepchildren Brian Kinney (Angela) and John Kinney, both of Saint John; grandchildren Darren Morrow, Karen Ritcey (Joel), Derek Land (Jacqueline), Alicia Zajac (Gord), Ian Murphy, and Erin Murphy; step grandchildren Jonathan Wilkins, Kayla Kinney, and Charli Kinney; great grandchildren Thomas, Katelyn, Alyssa, Sheena, Sean, Megan, Lauren, Noah, Alistair, Quinton, and Griffin; and several nieces and nephews. The last surviving member of his immediate family, Clifton was predeceased by his first wife, Audrey B. (Campbell) Murphy; an infant son, Brian; brothers Robert and Arthur; an adoptive sister, Jean McIntyre; half sisters Edith Wilmot and Jenett Galley; and a half brother James Wilmot. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from Brenan's Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 2:00 PM. For those who wish, remembrances to any charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family.
