Obituary of Ethel Alberta Cooper

Passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home. Widow of B. Edward (Ned) Cooper and the daughter of the late Capt. Charles and Bessie (Irvine) Richards. She was a life long resident of Saint John and a graduate of Saint John High School and Mount Allison University. She was a charter member of the H.M.S. Hood chapter, I.O.D.E. and served on the Historic Sites and Events civic committee for twelve years. During her tenure the flagpoles and blockhouse were erected on Fort Howe. She was a founding committee member for the Bi-Cap Project resulting in the restoration of the Imperial Theatre. She also served for a period on the Board of the Red Cross, and for many years she was an enthusiastic supporter and docent at the New Brunswick Museum. During her time at the museum she specialized in marine history, and received the pewter trilobite award in recognition of time served. Ethel and her late husband Ned, were avid members of the R.K.Y.C., and enjoyed many years of cruising the Saint John river, which they loved, in their yacht Cadenza. Ethel is survived by two sons, Richard Rand and Christopher Burton and his wife Diane and two grandchildren Joseph Edward and Thomas Steadman. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 8, 2011 at 12:00 noon from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment in Fernhill Cemetery.
