Obituary of Dorothy M. Gregory

It is with much sadness, we announce that our mother, Mrs. Dorothy M. "Terry" Gregory passed away on January 14th, 2012 during her afternoon nap at the Kennebec Manor Nursing Home. She is survived by her sister Mary (Fitzpatrick), her daughter Diane Jane and son-in-law Mark McGladrey, her two sons, Hugh Sinclair and daughter in-law P. Anne (Towerzey) and Charles Alexander, along with her step-grandchildren, Lisa, Susan, Amber and Andrew. She is pre-deceased by her parents Alexander Gustav Menesdorff (1974) and Myrtle Alice Menesdorff (nee Selway) (1980) and her older brother Clive T G Menesdorff (2010). "Terry" as all in Saint John knew her, was born "down under" in Lismore, Victoria, Australia on November 25th, 1924 and raised in Port Noarlunga, South Australia. Her Mother was the first woman in South Australia to earn her Teaching Certificate back in a time when women did not under take professional training at University. During World War II Terry served in the R. A. W. A. as a Communications (Radio) Operator for the Royal Australian Air Force. Terry was involved in many child volunteer Head Start projects to help make the lives of children better. Her involvement in the community also included serving on the Saint John Arts Council as their Secretary and she was the Saint John ticket agent for many years for the then fledgling Theatre New Brunswick. Terry will be remembered by Saint John High School alumni from the 1970’s, for her tirelessly efforts to help them master the art of theatrical make up, and for the door of our home was always open to students who needed guidance and help through the turbulent transition of the teen years into adult hood. Terry also was make up artist for the Fundy Frolics back in the 1960’s and many other musical and theatre productions that were mounted in Saint John. As an artist, Terry was a member of Boston’s Copley Society, where many of her oil on canvas works have been exhibited. Her paintings have been gifted to visiting Rotary officials and other dignitaries who have visited the Saint John area. In her later years Terry was deeply involved as volunteer at the Saint John Regional Hospital, giving freely of her time to bring companionship and comfort to those who were resident of the Palliative Care Unit. Terry showed her kids, if she could see you or hear you, she would be there for you. Family and friends are invited to join together at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424) this Thursday, the 19th of January 2012 at 4:00pm for her Funeral Service, to be followed by a Reception. Remembrances to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Per Terry’s last wish, her ashes are to be scattered at sea, so the great ocean currents can carry her back home to Australia.
