Obituary of Leona Joan Allaby

Leona Joan Allaby of Saint John, wife of the late Colby L. Allaby, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the Kings Way Care Centre. Born at Lorneville, New Brunswick on March 6, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Cecelia (Causey) Evans. Leona was a graduate of Saint John High School, and was formerly employed with Sears and with Baxter Dairies. She was an active member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the St. Luke’s Altar Guild. She also taught swimming at Saint John Vocational School through the Red Cross for many years. In her spare time, Leona enjoyed shopping, walking, and swimming. Leona is survived by her children, Dwight Allaby of Erb’s Cove, Dr. Leslie Allaby (Diana) of Summerville, Dianne Simmons of Rothesay, and David Allaby of Timmins, Ontario; her siblings, twin sister Lorna Boyd of Saint John, Marie Howe of Lorneville, Bernice George of Hamilton, Ontario, Doug Evans of Saint John, and Linda Evans of Moncton; grandchildren Sarah Munro (Michael), Matthew Allaby (Erin), Norah Dénis (Shaun), Geoff Allaby (Raylene), Maggie Allaby, Anna Allaby, Ian Babineau (Peter), Erica Simmons, Krista Simmons, Sean Allaby, Megan Allaby, Melissa Allaby, and Bonnie Allaby; great grandchildren Liam, Duncan, Colin, Katherine, Riley, Morgan, and Estelle; her former daughter-in-law, Meredith Allaby of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; and several nieces and nephews. Leona was predeceased by granddaughters Rebecca and Michelle Allaby; and by siblings Melvin Evans, Ronald Evans, Dorothy Burke, Gladys Cartwright, and Fanny McLeod. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, with visiting on Friday, January 13, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM at St. Luke’s Anglican Church. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to L’Arche Saint John, the Alzheimer Society of Saint John, or to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
