Obituary of Alexa Monica McCabe

Alexa Monica McCabe of Saint John, wife of the late Francis Eamon McCabe, passed away on Saturday, October 01, 2011 at the Saint John Regional Hospital, following a brief illness. Born at Sussex on January 26, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Alexa (McDonough) Howard. Alexa worked as a nurse during two periods of her life: before her children were born, and after being a stay at home mother, she returned to nursing. She worked in both Montreal, QC and Chatham, NB, and subsequently moved to Saint John after the death of her husband. Alexa was a wonderful cook, and had a talent for crafts and sewing. She was also a medal-winning seniors swimmer, and in the last few years greatly enjoyed the company of her beloved Papillon. Alexa is survived by her daughter, Ann McCabe of Dartmouth, NS; her son, Don McCabe of Saint John; a granddaughter, Sarah Jardine (Bill Smith) of Dartmouth; a great grandson, Xavier Jardine; a sister, Hortense Taylor of Cornwall, Ontario; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Alexa was predeceased by brothers and sisters Bill Howard, Father T.C. Howard, Eleanor England, Fred Howard, and Mary Girouard. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 10:00 AM from St. Rose de Lima Church. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Newcastle, on Thursday at 12:45 PM. For those who wish, remembrances to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
