Obituary of Harold Robertson Scarff Ellis

The death of Harold (Tim) Ellis occurred at his residence on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Tim is survived by his daughter Mary Stokes-Rees of Rothesay and her husband James, grandson Ian Stokes-Rees of Boston, his wife Emily, and their daughters,Margaret Bailey Stokes-Rees and Hilary Mary Jane Stokes-Rees. He is also survivedby grandson Andrew Stokes-Rees of London, UK, Tim is also survived by his sister Audrey Stanley and brother Warren Ellis, both of Rothesay. Born in Montreal in 1916 to Harold Grimmer Dodds Ellis and Elsa Marjorie (Scarff) Ellis, Tim grew up in Rothesay, attended Rothesay Collegiate School, and, upon graduating in 1933, joined the Bank of Nova Scotia, from which he retired in 1976. Tim served overseas in the Second World War from 1941-1945 with the 8th Princess Louise's New Brunswick Hussars, ending as a squadron commander and being awarded the Distinguished Service Order for actions in Italy. From 1992 to 1995 he was Honourary Lieutenant Colonel of his regiment.Tim was an early and active member of the Saint John Flying Club, president of the Rothesay Area Heritage Trust, warden of St. Paul's Church, president of the Association of the 8th Hussars, director of the Rothesay Pony Club, and a member of the Byng Boys' Club. To honour Harold’s request there will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made to St. Paul's Church, Rothesay. The funeral will be held at St. Paul's Church, Rothesay Common, on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery at a later date.
