Obituary of Irene Charlotta McWhirter

Surrounded by her family, the passing of Irene McWhirter occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 16, 2009. She was born at Clones, Queens County, NB to the late Wellington and Mabel (Williamson) Chittick. Irene was a homemaker most of her life but in her later years, she worked at Centra Care in the dietary department. She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church, The Best Years Fellowship Group and the Carleton Kirk GEMS. Above all, Irene loved her grandchildren, her church and her word search puzzles. She is survived by her only child, daughter, Donna Gilliland (Steve) of Saint John; three grandchildren: Kevin Gilliland (Diane), Kelly Rankin and Pam Stramaglia; four great grandchildren: Jena Gilliland, Benjamin and William Rankin and Kayla Stramaglia and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by two husbands: Charles W. Pevlin and Edgar R. McWhirter; one brother, Leslie Chittick and one sister, Dora Short. Irene was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the First Wesleyan Church, 399 Boars Head Road, Saint John on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 11 am. Interment will take place in Central Hampstead Baptist Cemetery. For those who wish remembrances may be made to the First Wesleyan Church or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
