Obituary of Bertha P. Daley

After a lengthy illness, the death of Bertha P. Daley of Saint John occurred on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Saint John on September 5, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Captain James P. and Ella (Moore) Loughery and was the wife of the late P. Oswald Daley. Bertha was a graduate of Saint John High School and Teachers’ College in Fredericton. She taught in several schools in New Brunswick and continued her profession in the Brampton area when she moved to Ontario in 1954 retiring there in 1970. After her husband’s death, she returned to Saint John where she spent many summers in Black River. Anglican by faith, Bertha attended both St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s Church in Saint John East, and St. Thomas’ Church in Black River. Bertha is survived by one sister, Dorothy Loughery of Saint John; two nephews, Merrill Loughery (Patricia) of Saint John West and Albert Loughery (Julie) of Markham, Ontario and by several grand-nieces and nephews, as well as an active friend, Allen Welch. She was predeceased by her brothers Emmerson and Grenville and her sister Jean. Although there will be no visitation, relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service which will be held on Saturday at 2:00 PM from St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, Black River. Interment will take place in St. Thomas’ Cemetery, Black River, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to St. Thomas’ Church or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
