Obituary of James A. Hill

James Alexander Hill, born December 16, 1943, died August 19, 2005, at home after a period of declining health. Jim was the elder of two sons born to the late Norman Percival and Georgina (Ina) nee Dartch Hill. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Jim was raised in Saint John along with his brother, Andrew, in Portland Place and later Mount Pleasant Avenue. Jim attended Dufferin and Princess Elizabeth schools before attending Horton Academy in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He later attended Rothesay Collegiate School from where he graduated in 1961. Jim began his career in the general insurance industry in southern Ontario after attending the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Jim returned to the province in 1968 to go into business with his father at Provincial Insurance Agency. He later assumed control of that Agency which was eventually sold to USF&G (which later became Canadian General Insurance). Jim worked with these companies until 1993 when he purchased Fairweathers Insurance. Jim was a long time director and past Chairman of C.A.A. Maritimes, a Past President and board member of the Union Club, Past Commodore of the Saint John Power Boat Club, Director of the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club, and Director of D.A.R.E. Saint John. As well, he was a member of the International Order of the Blue Goose, the Adanac Club, the Carleton York Association, Riverside Country Club and the Cliff Club, where he enjoyed the weekly cards and camaraderie. He was for many years affiliated with the Canadian Yacht Squadron, Canadian Ski Patrol, Ducks Unlimited, The Atlantic Salmon Federation and the Miramichi Salmon Association. Jim was an avid power boater as well as recreational sailor, fisherman, skier, and traveler. Anyone who knew Jim knows that few have enjoyed their work and play as much as he did. Jim is survived by his wife Mary Jane Logan, daughters Janice Bray (Ron) and Nancy MacInnis (Hugh) of Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia, and Joanne Goulden (Paul) of Shelburne, Nova Scotia; their mother Joyce Karsten, his brother Andrew Hill (Ruth) of Hampton and his children Abigail Hill and Samantha Hill (Aaron Booth) both of Ontario. He is also survived by several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and brothers and sisters in law. Visitation will be at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8pm, Tuesday 2-4 pm only, with a private family memorial service. A private family service will also be held for the interment. Donations to the Extra Mural Program Foundation, Saint John Unit or the Saint John Food Bank would be appreciated.
