Obituary of W. Peter Fenwick

W. Peter Fenwick passed away on August 15, 2014 at Kennebec Manor, Saint John. He was born in Saint John, NB the son of the late Donald T. Fenwick, and the late E. Muriel Fenwick (Nonnenman), but grew up mostly in River Hebert, Cumberland County, NS. In his youth he served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders 1st Battalion Reserve, being on site for both Springhill Mine disasters. He also served in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, H.M.C.S. Cornwallis, and on the frigate H.MC.S. La Hulloise. He graduated from River Hebert District High School in 1958, and from the College of Geographic Sciences in Lawrencetown, NS majoring in photogrammetry in 1963. He was active in the mapping industry, first with Energy, Mines and Resources in Ottawa, and then with Atlantic Air Survey (1963) Ltd. in Dartmouth and Fredericton. He served as chairman of the New Brunswick chapter of the Canadian Institute of Surveying (1970). During his lifetime he had lived and or worked in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Peter served the City of Saint John Planning Advisory Committee for 3 years as a member and 3 years as Chairman. He served the town of Grand Bay as Mayor from May 1992 until December 31, 1997, being its last mayor before its amalgamation with Westfield. He also served on the board of the River Valley Community Centre, and as Chairman of the Grand Bay-Westfield Fire Prevention Services board in 1998. He was a Past Chairman of the Fundy Regional Mayors Association, Vice President of the Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick, a former Commissioner of the Fundy Regional Landfill Commission, and a member of the 1996-1997 Local Government Review Committee- Fundy Region. He held offices in both federal and provincial Progressive Conservative Riding Associations and served as Vice President of the Provincial Party for Saint John County. In addition, he worked on political campaigns for friends, no matter what the party. He was a long time Insurance Agent, starting first with Confederation Life in 1972 and then with All State Insurance Company of Canada in 1973. Many company and industry awards and honours enhanced his 33 year career. He was a member of the Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters and Chartered Financial Consultants, receiving the distinction Chartered Life Underwriter in 1977 and the designation Chartered Financial Consultant in 1990, and the designation Certified Financial Planner in 1996 as a chartered member of the Financial Planners Standards Council of Canada. He was a Past President of the New Brunswick Insurance Institute and the Blue Goose Association, the Atlantic Canada Insurance Bureau of Canada ICAN Committee, the Life Underwriters Association of Canada-Fundy Chapter, and the NB-PEI Chapter of the CLU/CHFC Institute. During his lifetime he had served in various Jaycee Units regional offices, and as National Vice President of the Canadian Jaycee- Atlantic Region. He had active membership in the communities of Ottawa, Dartmouth, and Fredericton, and a life member of Junior Chamber International- JCI Senator Number 14799. He was the co-founder of Dartmouth Big Brother Association, a Past President of the Fredericton Association as Big Brother in Fredericton and Saint John. He was also a member of Hiram Lodge #6 F. & AM. Fredericton, NB and the Saint John Lodge of Perfection A. & ASR Valley of Saint John, NB. He was predeceased by his step-daughter, Heather J. Guiry of Saint John. He is survived by his wife, Madeleine (Bee) Fenwick of Grand Bay; a son, D.J. Peter Fenwick (Melissa) of Toronto, ON; a daughter, Margaret D.K. Hrushka (Douglas) of Yorkton, SK; a daughter, Penny A.N. Greening (Brian) of Vancouver, BC; and a step-son, Justin C. Guiry (Tracy) of Falmouth, NS; 4 grandchildren; a brother, Jeffrey (Yvonne) of Lower Sackville, NS; brother, Bruce (Sheila) of Calgary, AB. Resting at Brenan’s Bay View Funeral Home, 1491 Manawagonish Road, Saint John, NB (634-7425), with visiting on Thursday, August 28, 4-8 PM. A funeral service will be celebrated from The Church of The Resurrection, Grand Bay-Westfield on Friday, August 29, 2014, at 2:00 PM. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to Cancer Research or to S.P.C.A Animal Rescue League.
