Obituary of Kathy Isabel (MacLean) Molloy
It is with profound sadness that the family of Kathy Isabel Molloy announces her peaceful passing on November 25, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Predeceased by her parents Edward (Ted) and Isabel (Williams) MacLean and her younger brother Robert (Bob) MacLean, Kathy is survived by her husband, best friend, and beer drinking buddy, Michael Molloy; daughters, Erin Molloy (Jan Quasten), Leslie Molloy; and grandson, Ben Michael Quasten; sister, Elyzabeth and her husband Wayne Webb, and their children: Allison Webb (Kurt Werby) and Andrew Webb (Jinky Manez); her cousin, Bev Hugenholtz and family, and many Williams relatives.
Also left to mourn are her Molloy family: brother-in-law, John (Carol Miernicke); sisters-in-law: Anne (Doug Baxter), Maureen (Kevin Psutka), Patricia, Peggy, Kathy, Anne Lorraine Molloy; and Aunt Colleen Murphy (Bill Crawley) and her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
From an early age, Kathy developed and shared her musical talents as a soloist, grade school, university, community, and church choir member. She studied piano and voice and played clarinet in her Junior and High School bands. She is a proud alumnus of Simonds High School (Class of 1972) and Mt. Allison University (Class of 1976).
Miss MacLean/Mrs. Molloy began her teaching career as an elementary music specialist in June 1976 and retired in June 2013. As an itinerant teacher she worked with many music colleagues, classroom, resource, and guidance teachers, EAs and Administrative Assistants. She was always well supported by the principals as she delivered the music curriculum in their schools.
Mrs. Molloy shared many musical experiences with her students as they explored the concepts of music and shared performing opportunities at Christmas and year end concerts, Remembrance Day assemblies, and her school choirs participated in the Empty Stocking Fund and competed in the NB Competitive Festival of Music. Over the years she has enjoyed following her former students in Middle and High School choirs and musicals.
After retiring from teaching, Kathy (with Michael in tow) set off on a whole new series of adventures. They became world travelers, visiting Germany and Belgium for the beers, France for the organs, and the Caribbean to escape the winter. They explored the world of craft beer all around the Maritimes and became a permanent fixture at The Cask and Kettle for their weekly flights and bites.
Kathy’s kind and compassionate nature was felt by all those who met her, but none more than her family and friends. She was the champion and cheerleader for her girls, supporting them (and chauffeuring them) in everything from dance to Girl Guides, from piano to half marathons, to nursing school and teaching careers overseas. She doted on her grandson Ben, loving that technology could let them bridge the gap between Saint John and Dusseldorf.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Chris Embree and the health care team at the Stan Cassidy Centre for their professionalism, positivity, and expert guidance through the ALS journey, Dr. Kevin Smith, Dr. Julia Wildish for their advice and assistance with Kathy’s medical care, the Sant John Extra Mural team for their prompt, responsive and caring attention, the ALS Society of New Brunswick/Nova Scotia for their equipment lending program and to Home Care By Design for Kathy’s “United Nations” of home care workers, thank to you to Heather, Donna and Morgan providing in home cleaning, hair salon and spa services. Without their love and compassion our family would have collapsed under the strain and responsibilities of the 24 hour care needed by Kathy.
Thank you to family, friends, and our new neighbours on the 7th Floor of The Wentworth for checking in, visits, beer and pizza night, goodies left at the door, and allowing Kathy to still be able travel with them through Facebook posts.
Visitation will take place at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, 506-634-7424, on Friday, November 29, from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00. On Saturday, November 30, at 10:30 AM at St Mark’s United Church, 50 Dexter Drive, Saint John, everyone is invited to attend “Together We Sing” to celebrate the life of Kathy Isabel Molloy. Reception following in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
