Obituary of A. Carmen Kelly

After a brief battle with recently discovered cancer, Dr. A. Carmen Kelly of Saint John, husband of Audrey Mae (Friars) Kelly, passed away quietly on the evening of Sunday, January 25, 2009, surrounded by close family and the angelic staff of the Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Born at Saint John on September 24, 1930, he was a son of the late Wallace Harold and Hilda Elizabeth (Dempsey) Kelly. Dr. Kelly was a graduate of Saint John High School, Dalhousie University, and McGill University in 1964 with a Post Graduate specialty in anesthesia. His professional memberships included the M.D.C.M., the L.M.C.C., and F.R.C.P. (C.). Carmen’s passion for medicine served the Saint John and area communities until his retirement in 1996. From that point, the family summer home on the Bellisle and his extensive vegetable gardens and wood cutting became insatiable pastimes for him. In addition to his wife, Dr. Kelly is survived by three sons, Michael C. Kelly (Laurie Lynn) of Pickering, Ontario, Bruce W. Kelly (Sharon) of Saint John, and Robin A. Kelly of Saint John; two brothers, Murray of Moncton and Harold of Florida; four grandchildren, Gage, Jack, Hannah, and Morgan Leigh; and several nieces and nephews. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11:30 AM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Palliative Care Unit, the Canadian Cancer Society, or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
