Obituary of Hensley Matthew Higgins

Hensley Matthew Higgins of Saint John, husband of Edith E. (McLellan) Higgins, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Lot Sixteen, Prince Edward Island, he was a son of the late Christopher Clark and Ida Jane Penrose (Birch) Higgins. Hensley moved his family to Saint John in 1964, where he worked as a heavy duty mechanic for Irving Equipment. He enjoyed woodworking, especially wood turning, and made many decorative bowls, always searching for that perfect piece of wood. In his retirement, he also enjoyed vegetable gardening. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dialysis Unit and 4BN at the Saint John Regional Hospital for the wonderful care that Hensley received. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Hensley is survived by his children, Allan Higgins (Cora) of Rothesay and Ellen Higgins (Fidel Acosta) of Pennfield; grandchildren Matthew Higgins (Sherry) and Katherine “Katie” Higgins; a sister, Hazel Kelley of Prince Edward Island; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Hensley was predeceased by a brother, Nelson Higgins, and by a sister, Kathleen Bevan. Resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Prince Edward Island, at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances to the Dialysis Unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
