Obituary of Dorothy Elizabeth Lawson

Dorothy Elizabeth Lawson of Saint John, wife of D. Malcolm (Mac) Lawson, passed away peacefully at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, December 5, 2008. Born at Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ruby (Craft) McCullum. Dorothy worked at the T. Eaton Company before going to Canada Permanent on King Street until she started her family. She was a member of the Church of St. Andrew and St. David, and the International Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE). A tireless volunteer in the community, Dorothy was active in Meals on Wheels, the Saint John Animal Rescue League, the Red Cross, and the YM-YWCA, as well as many other worthy causes. For many years her summers were spent with her family at Ragged Point, where she enjoyed the company of other cottagers in the Raggedy Ann Social Club, and spring and fall the family always gathered at the Lakewood farm, which also held a special place in Dorothy’s heart. In addition to her husband of 61 years, Dorothy is survived by a son, John Lawson (Sandra) of Rothesay; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Lawson of Halifax, NS; grandchildren Jonathan, Chelsea, Jillian, Mark, and Brent; a brother, John (Jack) McCullum of Arizona; two sisters, Roberta Grandy and Phyllis Campbell, both of Saint John; and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by a son, David Lawson; and by sisters Winnifred, Gertrude, Vivian, and Thelma. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11:30 AM from Brenan’s Chapel. Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Saint John Animal Rescue League, the Salvation Army, or any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family, in lieu of flowers.
