Obituary of Raymond Allan Kane

Raymond Allan Kane (Buzzy) of Saint John West, husband of the late Phyllis June (Kingston) Kane, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born at Saint John on November 24, 1928, he was a son of the late Harold and Jennie (Bond) Kane. Raised in the North End of Saint John, he went to work at a young age as a CPR Trucker with the Port of Saint John. In 1954, he joined the Saint John Fire Department as a Firefighter where he had a long and distinguished career. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1973, Captain in 1984, and District Chief in 1985, a position he held with pride until his retirement in 1993. Buzzy spent many summers tending to his vegetable garden and property on the Bellisle Bay, as well as cruising around in his white convertible. In the winter months he could be found painting portraits and carving ducks. Buzzy was a member of Portland United Church for many years and enjoyed his time serving dinners with the Men’s Group, but his greatest pride and joy were his four grandchildren. Buzzy is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Hebert (Michael) and their children Taylor and Bryce; his son, Allan Kane (Andrea) and their children Sam and Anna, all of Saint John; his special friend, June Northorp; sisters Helen Donaldson (Ronald) of Coles Island and Betty Holt (Angus) of Saint John; a sister-in-law, Mary Kane of Nova Scotia; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his loving wife Phyllis, who died in 1999, Buzzy was predeceased by a brother, Harold Kane, and a sister, Norma Estey. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday at 12:00 Noon from Portland United Church, Newport Crescent, Saint John. Interment will take place in Greenwood Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Portland United Church Roof Fund or to any charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. www.brenansfh.com.
