Obituary of Ronald Garfield Ferris

The death of “Ron” Ronald Garfield Ferris of Saint John, NB, husband of Anne Weston-Ferris, occurred on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on February 23, 1922, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Farren) Ferris. At the time of his retirement he was Manager of the Lord Beaverbrook Rink and had formerly been employed at the Boy’s Industrial Home and the Saint John Dry Dock. A veteran of World War II, he served as Captain with the 8th Hussars, Princess Louise’s Regiment. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Past Master of Hibernia Lodge # 3, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Luxor Temple Shrine, the Oriental Band and past-president of the Shrine Club. As a member of the No. 174 Saint John Civilian Rifle Association he captured the New Brunswick sporting rifle championship in 1940-41 and taught Rifle Shooting to the Army Cadet Corp # 1691 which he had been instrumental in forming. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, David (Alice) of Chilliwack, BC and John (Marjorie) of Halifax, NS; three step-daughters, Cheryl (Paul) Maillet and Brenda (Lloyd) Hunter, both of Willow Grove, NB, and Pamela Taylor of Saint John; one sister, Ruth Higgins of Saint John; eight grandchildren, Scott Ferris, Andrea Feindel, Tony, Jamie and Tim Maillet, Tina Sansom, Randy Thurlow and Matt Taylor; three great-grandchildren, Makenzie Feindel, Hayley Sansom and Alexander Geldart (Maillet); several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley (Hoyt); two brothers, Douglas and Kenneth; two sisters, Mabel Capson and Dorothy English. Resting at Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506) 634-7424 with visiting on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A Masonic Lodge Service will be held on Sunday evening at 7:30 pm. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009 from Forest Hills Baptist Church at 1:00 pm.
